Kalibr Targets for Multi-Camera and Camera-IMU Calibration
Our Kalibr Targets are built for direct use with Kalibr, one of the most widely used open-source calibration toolboxes in robotics research. Kalibr provides calibration routines for multi-camera rigs, camera–IMU systems, and rolling-shutter cameras, making it a standard tool for drone and autonomous vehicle platforms where multiple sensors must be calibrated into a common reference frame.
The pattern is an AprilGrid: a grid of individually identifiable AprilTag fiducial markers, Kalibr's own documentation explicitly recommends this target over its checkerboard and circle-grid alternatives, since an AprilGrid can be calibrated even when only partially visible in the camera frame. This is particularly valuable in multi-camera and camera-IMU setups, where the full target is rarely visible to every sensor at once, and each tag's unique ID additionally resolves the target's pose without the orientation ambiguity that plain checkerboard patterns can produce. AprilTag itself is a well-established visual fiducial system developed at the University of Michigan, designed for high localization accuracy and robust detection across lighting conditions and viewing angles.
Our standard Kalibr Targets use the DICT_AprilTag_36h11 dictionary with a tag-spacing-to-tag-size ratio of 0.3, matching Kalibr's own default configuration out of the box, so the target works immediately with Kalibr's standard YAML target definitions, no custom configuration required. Need a different AprilTag dictionary or custom spacing for your setup? Contact us, we can make any adjustment to the Kalibr Target.
