Checker Targets for Camera Calibration

Checkerboard patterns are the original and still most widely used calibration target in computer vision. The alternating black-and-white squares create sharp, well-defined corners that can be localized with very high subpixel accuracy, since each corner is surrounded on all four sides by contrasting squares, giving a detection algorithm an unambiguous, symmetric feature to lock onto. This makes the checkerboard pattern the reference choice whenever maximum corner accuracy is the priority, such as precise intrinsic calibration, lens distortion correction, and stereo camera rig alignment.

Checkerboard detection is natively built into the two most common computer vision toolchains: OpenCV provides the dedicated findChessboardCorners() function (with subpixel refinement via cornerSubPix()), while MATLAB's Computer Vision Toolbox and Camera Calibrator app support checkerboard detection and calibration out of the box. Because the pattern and its corner numbering are a long-established standard, our targets drop directly into the calibration workflows most engineering and research teams already use, without any custom detector code.

Keep in mind that, unlike marker-based targets such as ArUco or ChArUco boards, a plain checkerboard pattern must be fully visible in the image to be detected, since corner identification relies on the board's overall grid structure rather than per-corner encoding. If your application involves frequent occlusion or partial views, our ChArUco Target combines checkerboard-level corner accuracy with the occlusion tolerance of ArUco markers.

Choosing the right resolution

We offer each board size in two pattern densities, so the checker size can be matched to your camera's resolution and working distance:

  • Medium Resolution — larger checkers, designed for cameras below 2 megapixels
  • High Resolution — finer checkers, designed for cameras above 2 megapixels, enabling more corners to be resolved within the same board area

Built for precision and durability, indoors or out

  • Rigid, dimensionally stable panel keeps the pattern flat and accurately positioned
  • Low thermal expansion minimizes pattern drift across temperature swings
  • Water-resistant for outdoor use from −50°C to +80°C
  • Rated for up to 3 years outdoors without significant degradation
