ChArUco Calibration Targets for Camera Calibration and Pose Estimation

Standard ArUco markers are fast and robust to detect, but their corner positions are not perfectly accurate, even after subpixel refinement, the ArUco corner is only as precise as the detected square's edges. Chessboard patterns solve this: each inner corner is surrounded by four black-and-white squares, which refines to much higher subpixel accuracy. The problem is that a pure chessboard pattern must be fully visible to be detected, any occlusion or partial view breaks the calibration.

Our ChArUco targets combine both approaches on a single rigid board. ArUco markers are embedded inside the white squares of a chessboard pattern, so the markers can be used to interpolate the position of the surrounding chessboard corners even when part of the board is occluded or only partially in view. Because the interpolated corners still belong to the underlying chessboard, they retain full chessboard-level subpixel accuracy, combining the versatility of marker-based detection with the precision needed for reliable camera calibration, lens distortion correction, and high-accuracy pose estimation. ChArUco boards are a built-in calibration pattern in both ecosystems: OpenCV provides dedicated CharucoBoard and CharucoDetector classes for board detection and corner interpolation, while MATLAB's Computer Vision Toolbox and Camera Calibrator app support ChArUco-based calibration workflows out of the box, so our targets integrate directly into the pipelines most engineering and research teams already use.

Each pattern uses the DICT_5x5_1000 dictionary, well-suited for the vast majority of applications. Need a different dictionary or a fully custom pattern? Contact us, we can make any adjustment to the ChArUco target.

Choosing the right resolution

We offer each board size in two pattern densities, so the checker and marker size can be matched to your camera's resolution and working distance:

  • Medium Resolution — larger checkers and markers, designed for cameras below 2 megapixels
  • High Resolution — finer checkers and markers, designed for cameras above 2 megapixels, enabling more corners to be resolved within the same board area

Built for precision and durability, indoors or out

  • Rigid, dimensionally stable panel keeps the pattern flat and accurately positioned
  • Low thermal expansion minimizes pattern drift across temperature swings
  • Water-resistant for outdoor use from −50°C to +80°C
  • Rated for up to 3 years outdoors without significant degradation
